OmNomNom Get in My Belly!!

Crepes crepes, lovely breakfast crepes.

I made them! And they turned out quite well as a matter of fact! I need to adjust how much margarine I used in the pan because it gave the crepes a slightly buttery flavor. I was afraid they would stick to the pan and burn. My professor offered to allow me to use his crepe pan. I will be using that Monday morning in preparation for my presentation. Here are some pictures from my first crepe adventure:

Flour, vanilla, milk, sugar, baking powder in a happy little bowl.

Adding the eggs to the mixture, mixing it up, and preparing to cook!

One successful crepe to the right and one cooking in the pan!

Bananas and Nutella all in a row.

Finished product, with a bit of powdered sugar on top.

Do they look good to you? I hope so! You should definitely try to make these. They are very easy, as easy as pancakes. They taste delicious and the recipes makes about 8 crepes. Enjoy!

Recipe Shmecipe

Hello Fellow Food Lovers!

I have done it! Yes! I have found the crepe recipe that I will be using (see below).

Why am I using the most basic crepe recipe? Very good question! Crepes all have the same base. Regardless of what happy-goodness you fill them with, the pancake-like wrap is essentially the same. This recipe will allow me to change the filling easily. I found several recipes that had unique filling recipes but since I'm just starting of my cooking adventure, I thought the more basic recipe would be best. I will be filling my crepes with bananas and nutella and will perhaps put some powdered sugar on top. Sound yummy? Well I hope they turn out well. Next time I will hopefully have pictures of my own tasty creation!

Food Exploration: The Old World

Hello my darling food enthusiasts.

I've been considering what type of food to choose for this project. History is an important part of how we view ourselves and view others.  I'm quite fascinated with my family history and the types of food my ancestors may have had access too. While my dad's side of the family immigrated from England and Scotland shortly after the Mayflower arrived in the US, my mom's side of the family came from France and Sweden later. Besides looking into different food items from the "old country," I have to consider that my favorite meal of the day is breakfast. You must understand that for me, breakfast is the first meal of the day regardless of whether I wake up a 7am or 3 pm. That first meal is breakfast. No matter what.

How, then, can I combine my love for breakfast food and something from a country my family is from? Well my friends, I think I have found a solution. Crepes! Crepes are a fantastic food item from France. They can be eaten for breakfast (the sweet nutella and strawberry ones are my fav!) or dinner (savory crepes with all types of fillings). So there you have it! I shall prepare crepes, eat crepes, love crepes, be crepes for this project! How delightful is that? I'm so excited! Crepes are a wonderfully decadent combination of my family history and my favorite meal of the day.

Thoughts and Props

Have you ever read North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell? It's a rather interesting novel, if you haven't read it before you should. It's a rather easy 19th Century British novel and is enjoyable to read. I bring this up because I'm reading it for another class and because in the text there is a debate between the workers and the masters in the manufacturing town of Milton. It reminded me of coffee manufacturing and growing. While this blog is primarily designed to discuss the creative project for a science class, there is a short research paper that I have to complete. Perhaps I will do my research on coffee? Free-trade coffee? We shall see. At any rate. Are there any suggestions for the actual Food Project? I was thinking a pie or something but that seemed too simplistic.

The Beginning of the End

I once again find myself on another journey of discovery and newness. As a senior undergraduate and beginning my final semester of life as I know it, I had some extra credit hours to fill. The Honors Program is currently offering a new biology course: Food and Science. I decided that I would do what most students wouldn't do if they didn't have to: take an extra science course just for the fun of it. Beyond labs, reading assignments, and a paper, we have to do a food project. This project involves us making a food item, researching it, sharing it in class, and keeping a blog along the way. Food, Fun, and Friends. The three ingredients to a good time, every time. Join me on this journey toward finding exciting, taste bud tantalizing food. As this project develops and as graduation gets ever closer, I hope we can all find a little solace in the consistency of  a good meal, the fun one has in creating and enjoying food, and the friends we may find along the way. Bon Appetit!
